Autism InformationWHAT IS AUTISM?Autism is a developmental disability that typically appears in the first three years of life and is characterized by an inability to speak or use language appropriately, odd, unusual or stereotypic behaviors, impaired or absent social skills and in many children sensory problems commonly known as sensory integration disorder. Autism is the result of a neurological disorder that affects functioning of the brain and currently effects 1 child out of 150, 1 out of every 94.
Autism is a spectrum disorder with disabilities ranging from those severely affected to those mildly affected who appear very close to normal.
What causes autism? No one knows for sure what causes autism. Current research points to multiple causes including parental genes interacting, neurotransmitter deficiencies (fluid brain cells need to work properly). Some believe it may be due to environmental factors such as heavy metal toxicity's (lead and mercury).
How can you diagnose autism? One of the most common screening tools to screen for autism is the mCHAT (modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) Test. If the mCHAT test indicates autism then the complete diagnosis is made best by a Autism Diagnostic Team. The diagnostic process should consist of a parental questionnaire, psychological & neurological evaluation of child by multidisciplinary team.
Be sure to also rule out any medical diagnosis with a full physical exam including blood work, MRI of the head and a genetic analysis. The 2005 report on autism from the National Institutes of Health also recommends testing for lead toxicity on children suspected of having autism.
UPDATE: The Autism EpidemicAutism is now the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. It is currently at epidemic proportions with 1 child in every 150 being diagnosed with ASD. Although research is on going no one yet knows the cause or the cure for autism. It is believed that autism may have multiple causes.
It is projected that in 2009 over 700 children will be diagnosed with autism in the state of Colorado alone. Autism has become a global epidemic effecting children all over the world. It is now recommended that pregnant women and young children avoid certain types of fish which may contain high levels of heavy metals.
The Autism Society of Colorado reports that effective early intervention cuts the cost of lifetime care by two thirds and can raise IQ scores by as much as 20 points, saves $6 in special education cost for every $1 invested, reduces the percentage of children that will never speak from 50% to 14% and reduces the need for institutional level care form 45% to 10%.
Although no one can predict the out come of a child with ASD this report is very encouraging to our parents. |
