Dr. Colvin practiced medicine for nearly eight years before making a decision that could change her life forever. In December 1997 she chose to leave a successful career as a physician specializing in Family Medicine in order to work with her son, Matthew. The diagnosis of Infantile Autism was made in April 1997 and it was certain that her life would never be the same. Karen W. Colvin would now serve as her son’s first teacher. She would also manage his therapies and coordinate a team of psychologists, consultants, teachers, and therapists to insure an appropriate education for Matthew. Since that time the Colvins have endured a long and difficult struggle to obtain the special therapy and education he needs to overcome the disability of Autism. Since leaving her practice she has studied the various therapies to treat children with autism spectrum disorder including applied behavior analysis, verbal behavior, sensory integration therapies, relationship development intervention and social stories. She has over 10 years of experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She has over 100 hours of continuing autism education.She currently serves on the board of the Mental Health Association of Pueblo, Southern Colorado Community Connections and the Pueblo Interagency Community Council. She is a regular guest lecturer at unversities, community organizations and schools.
Karen W. Colvin is a 1989 graduate of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA and completed her residency in Family Medicine at Oral Roberts University and In His Image Residency Program in Tulsa, OK. She holds a Masters Degree in Biological Science from the University of Buffalo. Dr. Colvin completed her undergraduate degree at Syracuse University.
